Tea to combat stress

Tea has long been associated with an immediate response at times of stress. There may now be a scientific explanation why at the first sign of trouble we in the UK put the kettle on to calm down and focus our thoughts with a cup of tea.

Studies show that the amino acid, L-theanine, may induce a state of calm and enhance levels of concentration and focus. Japanese researchers have discovered that L-theanine is easily absorbed by the brain and influences chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin which affect mood. The effect of L-theanine combined with caffeine may contribute to the feeling of increased energy and wellbeing associated with drinking tea.
