How to Prepare a Yixing Teapot

  • Immerse the teapot in a large pan of cold, clear water.
  • Rub the teapot gently with the sponge side of a new scotchbright sponge/scourer.
  • Use a very mild toothpaste to wash the teapot inside and out, using the green scourer side of the sponge. Don't scrub too hard, the idea is just to clean the surface gently.
  • Rinse the Teapot with clean water.
  • Prepare a large pot with clean water, put the teapot in, cover and place over the heat. Let the teapot boil for about 10 -15 minutes to to clean the pores; Remove the teapot and allow to drain and cool.
  • Use the cheapest Oolong that you have to make a strong brew in the teapot then pour it away.
  • Rinse the teapot with clean water and leave it uncovered to allow it to dry overnight.
  • Never use any detergents or solvents on your teapot after this. Try to keep the pot for use with one particular tea type (you’ll need more than one Yixing Teapot to brew your different teas.)
